First, hypnotism is by definition a short-term intervention. We are usually able to help with a problem quickly as we by-pass the conscious mind which is where resistance to change tends to be.

Second, people who do psychotherapy often find it appropriate to explore issues beyond those that the client identified as a problem when the client came for help. This may be appropriate for psychotherapy, but it is not appropriate for hypnotism. In hypnotism the center of control must always remain with the client. Therefore, we work on what you came for, and we stay on target.

When I work I make use of a system called _the Discipline for Pastoral Care Giving._ It is a focused system for outcomes oriented chaplaincy developed at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center. _The Discipline_ keeps things focused, intentional and forward moving.
