Kitchen Status

When I announced plans to build my dream kitchen, several people advised me to just move to a new house instead. They said it would be less disruptive.

Well, I’m happy to report that isn’t true, but the kitchen renovation has taken longer than I hoped. Fortunately, at this point I basically have a working kitchen, even though it’s not finished.

The first delay happened because the cabinet maker forgot to make one of the specified cabinets. Therefore, we had to wait until that oversight could be corrected.

But the real delay has been the backsplash. In the design it’s a huge thing. It extends from the counter-tops up to the ceiling on three walls. It was to be made of tiles of the same material as the counters (Silstone) and then perforated to support two large stainless steel shelves, a restaurant ventilation hood and three racks for hanging cooking tools.

As the job went forward progress kept stopping as different craftspeople announced that the (fully pre-approved and pre-paid) backsplash design was impossible and could not be built. Finally, we found someone who said he could do it, but now we’re waiting until he feels he wants to get around to the job.

I’m actively thinking about redesigning the whole thing to use ceramic tile instead, or just put up a metal wall-covering of stainless steel, copper or bronze and start mounting shelving and racks right through it.

But at least I’ve now got a working stove, dishwasher, microwave, sink and refrigerator/freezer. I’m not yet able to play with all my new toys, but I can cook again.
