Pre-Surgical Hypnotism

From the Chicago Tribune, Tuesday, September 4, 2007, Tempo, page 6

Hypnosis helps patients
Women who received hypnosis before breast cancer surgery needed less anesthesia during the procedure, reported less pain afterward, needed less time in the operating room and had reduced costs, according to a study at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. During the hypnosis session, that patients received suggestions for relaxation and pleasant imagery, as well as advice on how to reduce pain, nausea and fatigue.

This is not news to me. I do about one hundred pre-surgical hypnotic sessions each year, all conducted after approval from the attending physician. I have generally found that everyone benefits from pre-surgical hypnotism, and that healing and recovery times are approximately half of what would have been expected.

The results for pre-surgical work are so obvious that this is the only form of hypnotism I will do on a single-session basis. For everything else I do multiple sessions as research shows that produces the best and longest-lasting outcome. But for pre-surgical work, only one session is needed and the results are astounding.
